Vegemite changes name to ‘Australia,’ celebrates ordinary Aussies

Who wants to be Australian of the Year when you can be the face of vegemite’s ‘Toast of a Nation?’

The infamous spread, which is more Aussie than a kangaroo wearing a bluey with a coldie in one hand and a sausage sanga in the other, is changing its name in the lead up the Australia Day and has found ten finalists, everyday Aussies doin’ good.

Australians have been raised on Vegemite for 89 years, providing a love for the delicious spread that still terrifies tourists and expats who can’t quite wrap their head around the unique stuff.

Proving just how Aussie the spread is, Kraft has changed the logo to a map of Australia, and the name, appropriately, to simply “Australia.”

The faces and bios of the ten finalists in its ‘Toast of a Nation’ search will also feature on the limited edition jars.

Vegemite – or ‘Australia’- currently has 25 finalists it has to whittle down to the final 10, with the help of voters across the country.

They include a man and his dog who raise over $45,000 a year motorcycling around the nation for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, an Under 8’s footy Coach who works tirelessly to ensure his team always performs their very best and the woman who tours Australia to bring the medicinally proven benefits of a hearty laugh to young and old.

The Under-19 Australian Women’s lacrosse team has already taken out the $10 000 people’s choice award for "having a right old crack at becoming World Champions."

"We put our heart & souls into the campaign, working every day to be the very best we can be," they say.

"As well as school, training, lifting, working & running we have to fundraise to cover our costs for the World Championship as we have no funding!

"So we have given that a fair crack as well..from sausage sizzles to raffles we have been slogging it out to follow our dream of becoming World Champions with nothing getting in our way.

"Our team is made up of 20 girls that all embrace the Australian spirit. While we work hard at training, we still know how to have a good time & we celebrate being Australian at every opportunity.

"We are strong, passionate, relentless Aussies!!"
