Victorian government launches $9 million plant protein hub

The Victorian government has opened a new plant protein hub and glasshouse at Agriculture Victoria’s Horsham SmartFarm.

The hub is now operational following a $12 million investment from the government, with $9 million for the hub and $3 million for the glasshouse.

The plant protein hub offers shared spaces for start-ups, researchers and growers, as well as a test kitchen, analytical equipment and facilities to explore new plant-based products.

The facilities will support researchers and industry partners to develop high-protein crop varieties to meet growing demand for plant-based foods such as lentils, chickpeas and field peas.

“Victoria is leading the way in plant-based protein research, building world-class facilities and fostering collaboration that will transform agriculture and strengthen regional economies,” said minister for agriculture Ros Spence.

The hub is already a centre for research activity, with PhD students working alongside industry and researchers. It can accommodate up to 10 PhD students and three start-ups, and Agriculture Victoria is working with industry on future research opportunities.

Construction of the hub created jobs across trades, suppliers and technical services. It will continue to provide opportunities in research, education and collaboration.

Students from primary school to post-graduate level in the region will be able to access hands-on learning in a dedicated education space, supporting pathways into agricultural careers.

“This investment will help our communities reach new markets, drive local jobs, champion sustainable practices, and ensure a strong and resilient future for regional Victoria,” said parliamentary secretary for regional Victoria Michaela Settle.

The new glasshouse will accelerate crop research, improve pest and disease management and support climate resilience, helping farmers adapt to changing conditions and maintain productivity.

“Having fit-for-purpose facilities like the Plant Protein Hub at Horsham SmartFarm strengthens our research capabilities and opens the door to new opportunities across agriculture and food innovation,” said member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora.
