What farmers want in 2013

The WA Farmers Federation will this week launch its 2013 election demands, and live exports, land clearing and genetically modified foods have all made the list.

WAFF president Dale Park told The Sunday Times Western Australia should be shipping more live exports as its more profitable than having the animals killed locally.

Live exports have been a key issue in the industry since a one month suspension was introduced in 2011, following footage of Australian cattle being mistreated in an Indonesia abattoir. All countries buying Australian livestock must now comply with strict animal welfare standards.

Also on the WAFF's wishlist is changing what Park refers to as "draconian" land-clearing laws, Perth Now reports.

They're effectively taking away people's ability to farm some of their land," he said.

"If you knock over a single tree that's within 50m of another single tree, you've broken the law."
