Woman injured at Shepparton plant

A worker has sustained crush injuries to her arms after they became trapped in a food processing machine at a manufacturing plan in Shepparton early this morning.

The woman, thought to be 30, was working at around 1.30am when she was injured. She was airlifted to hospital in Melbourne.

Worksafe is investigating the incident.

Worksafe regional director Shane Gillard said the event served as a reminder of the danger posed by machines.

“We know machines are essential to many businesses, but they can be dangerous and must be controlled,” he said.

He said 11,000 workers in Victoria have sustained injuries from dangerous machines in the past five years.

Gillard said the incident comes as a warning employers should take preventative measures to recognise and control risks associated with dangerous machines at the workplace.

”Workers should also speak up if they were concerned about safety,” he said.

“If we’re going to keep Victoria the safest place to work, employers and employees have to play their part.”
